Our Museum is home to a fascinating collection of fossils as well as artifacts from early settlers to recent times. Our Museum seeks to present opportunities for students to better understand the social and natural history of Qualicum Beach and area through many hands on activities. Please come and join us as we step back in time to learn more about the past of our community and the world around us. Working with our district schools we have developed five curriculum based programs. These programs are summarized as follows.

1. Museum Discovery. (This program is open to all grades)

Come walk through the Museum with a guide and learn from all exhibits: Paleontology, First Nations, Pioneer Times and Energy , Power and Communication. Teachers should let us know about their individual needs as we are happy to organize a focused tour upon request.

2. Pioneer Times. (This program is for Grade 3)

This is a great opportunity for students to experience the every day life of families in our community one hundred years ago. How different life was before electricity! Students will get a chance to visit our “pioneer general sore”, make butter the “old fashioned way” and see what a class room was like in the early 1900s.

Many adults see our school display and we hear them say, “ I remember ------------“

3. First Nations. (This program is for grade 4)

Come listen to the wonderful stories of the First people of this land. Learn about their unique relationship to the land and the sea, and get the chance to discover the story of the “Sacred Cedar Bark” and how it influenced so much of their life.

4. Paleontology Discovery. (This program is for grades 5 - 7)

Graham Beard is a recognized expert paleontologist. He has assembled a world class collection for the Museum. This includes “Rosie”, a 70,000 year old walrus who was found just 10 kilometers from here. In addition to the many fossils from Vancouver Island he has also collected fossils from around the world such as the 70,000 year old Cave Bear also shown below.

5. Energy, Power and Communication. ( for grades 3-7)

Students will learn about the development of communication, power and energy throughout the years thanks to our extensive collection of early telephones, radios and old engines.
